Cinquecento Love: My lifelong obsession with the FIAT 500 is my article/photo essay in a special print edition of Accenti Magazine. With the COVID Pandemic, we do not know when the issue will be printed. The article is now available online at the link posted below.
Accenti, The Canadian Magazine with an Italian Accent was launched in November 2002. Thirty-one issues were published in print. Since January 2015, Accenti is published online-only. Accenti also publishes a newsletter, which is emailed to subscribers.
Cinquecento Love: My lifelong obsession with the FIAT 500
‘Nothing says Italian style like a Fiat 500 (pronounced cheen·kweh·CHEN·toh). My love affair with the 500 began when I was 16. I really wanted one, but it would not fit into my suitcase. So I had to go home without one. I don’t know if I will ever own a super cute, chubby 500, but I have spent years photographing them all over Italy. Every time I see one, I just want to give it a hug!’ …….read the rest of the article at Accenti online. You can also order a print copy of the magazine-orders outside of Canada just need to pay for shipping.
I also love the old Cinquecento cars, Cristina!
When I’m in Italy I usually find a few really battered ones to photograph.
They sometimes have weeds growing up around them, so haven’t been moved or loved for quite a while.
I also take pictures of tiny Ape trucks too.
They are all very huggable.
Hope you didn’t get called back in to work.
Ciao Shelagh Ape are adorable too! Love the noise they make-which is why they are called ape 🐝. I’m casual and it is not busy. I’ve worked about 5 days in the last 6 weeks, so not too much! Stay safe, Cristina
I share your love of the cinquecento Cristina. I notice every one that passes me whether I am in Aus or in Italy. ciao ciao, Lyn
You have ‘cinquecento radar’ too then Lyn! I can’t wait to be able to go cinquecento hunting again! Ciao, Cristina
Fantastic Cristina!
I hope you sell many more prints of this cute car.

Grazie Denise!
I hope to start a woodcut soon 🤞🏻. Ciao, Cristina
Cristina, the 500 is the car I learned to drive on when I was 15. In the Campagna. Unfortunately, I drove it into the ditch. But no problem, my two male cousins just picked it up and put it back on the road! Lololol!
Veramente 😲! WoW Anna, I am soooooo jealous! Not the ditch part, of course…..They just picked it up and put it back on the road 🤣🤣🤣. I love it! Stay safe, Cristina
You’re right. The 500 is cute as can be. I can see why you want to give each of them a hug.
I’m so glad you understand 😎
Small car! The 500 is for 50.0% perhaps. Yes, a small car
I am a small person so the 500 is perfect for me 😎
I remember them from when I traveled in Italy as a child 😎
I had a red cinquecento with the black cloth top, just like the one in your photo. I LOVED that little car. I bought it used in 1967 for $50.00. Obviously, at that price it had a lot of problems. It only lived for another 3 months, but they sure were fun months before they took her off to the “graveyard.”
What a great story Pamela. Best $50 you ever spent, I bet. Your car must have looked just like my Christmas card! Ciao, Cristina
Great article and each new picture brought a smile to my face! So adorable! I rented a 500L in Italy and expected a small car to navigate the narrow roads and was surprised at how big the model actually is, but I liked it.
Grazie Karen. Glad they made you smile 😊. Yes The L is pretty pumped up. All this cinquecento talk is getting me motivated for some new sketches. Ciao, Cristina
Ha! The 500 is a cute car, absolutely “mythical” as they say Italian. The first time I went to Italy my host drove me around town (and up to Umbria) in one. I had a blast. I actually owned one when I lived in Rome, but I found I hardly ever drove it. I’m 6’2″ and it was quite a tight fit… But I do have to say, they are practical for parking. They might not fit in a suitcase, but they do fit into a lot of very tight spaces where a normal sized car would not!
I’m 5’0, so perfectly ‘cinquecento sized’😂😂😂. I’ll send you one of my cards-it is ‘one size fits all’! Ciao, Cristina
..adore this little, zippy, fiesty love machine!! If California does not have such a strict emissions requirements, I’d get myself the Italian Stallion I’ve have longed for…
Love your Blog Cristina!!
Hey Sophie! Great to hear from you! Thanks for visiting my little creative space. I love writing it! Stay safe, Cristina
I think I am obsessed with this one too LOL
Against my hubby’s advice for obvious reason, I wanted to rent one of these when we went on a road trip, years ago, across Italy.
However when we got to the rental agency we got a Fiat 500L instead🙂
Much I’ve learned about Fiat 500 since then!
Ciao, stay safe!
Congrats Cristina on the article/photo essay!
I completely agree with you, FIAT 500s are so adorable. I don’t know what it is, but they are always in the most perfect spot to snap a photo. I absolutely adore the dusty blue one you photographed. I love how it just pops out in contrast to the stone of the buildings.
Grazie LuLu-Cinquecenti are so huggable! ‘Celestina’ lives in my village in Puglia, so i have photographed her a lot. Next time i will have to take a photo with her. I won’t be going as usual in August…hope I get to see her soon! ciao, Cristina
